When we talk about Ancient Science and Modern outlook at the same time it might seem that we are talking about two contradictory aspects. Strangely it’s not; instead we are talking about the two sides of the same coin. The purpose behind the birth of every science has been and will always be only and only to serve mankind. As time passes by the Science either gradually evolves or fades away and is lost in the womb of the Time.

To begin with we know that the gravitational forces (Have we ever seen the gravitational force with our naked eyes?) of the sun and the moon cause water tides on earth. Likewise the planetary bodies too have their influence upon human bodies. Seventy percent of human body is made up of water, modern science says so. It would be apt to say that we are not Human beings for a divine experience rather we are Divine beings for a Human experience. We are not just a physical body. We know about the five subtle bodies including our physical body that is surrounded by these bodies. This knowledge has been properly documented in the Ancient Indian Scriptures. We regard the so called Modern science which is only a few hundred years old. How can we simply ignore the Science that existed even before that maybe ages and eons ago? If time is the factor to decide that Ancient Vedic science is too obsolete and does not hold credibility anymore then The Modern Science is ought to lose it’s credibility a few hundred years or thousand years from today! Surely this does not sound wise.

Nowadays we all come across words like Consciousness, Atman, Soul, Spirit, Divine, Spirituality….the list is endless.

Does this imply the physical body alone? We experience thoughts, emotions, sensations which transcend the physical nature of the body. These abstract factors are a part of our physical body, aren’t they? The West has often propagated the words mind, body and soul, mind over matter and certainly they understand it for the good hence they seem to be enchanted so much by this philosophy. However the understanding of these subtle aspects is at a very nascent stage. Unless we study this science properly it is unwise to arrive at a conclusion and label it as false or vague.

Vedic Astrology is a time-tested and proven science that was cognized by the Rishis (ancient Seers) and Sages on transcendental level. It’s purpose was to serve the common folk and help them guide at different stages of their lives. Dogmas and Doctrines have often dictated human lives since time immemorial. Knowledge and Truth do not mean the same. Knowledge is changeable, Truth is eternal. It is disastrous to confuse them! Truth can further be classified as Absoute Truth and Relative/ Contextual Truth. There is a saying in India “Lakir Ke Fakir Ban Na” which crudely translates into – It is not always wise to take all knowledge in the literal sense. If we do so then we actually lose the very essence of it. Knowledge is knowing it. Wisdom is applying it.

In a nutshell, if we learn to apply the Ancient Vedic Science in context to our Modern Day Life we will be astounded to see the results. How? Let’s unravel it in the next article.

To be continued….

To begin with, we will not look at the classical definition of astrology as I am sure every one of

us can find it in books or internet. We will understand the term “Astrology” in a more refined

manner and how it relates to a common man in day to day life in a broader sense. Today when

we pick up a newspaper we all find a column dedicated to daily horoscope. We all, at least at

some point of time, must have given this column more than a mere glance – be it a school going

student, professional, jobless person, businessman, college student, employee, educated or

uneducated person, married or unmarried person or a young couple in love. Some have done this

occasionally, some randomly (without any serious intention) and some regularly. Have you ever

wondered why? The single and common reason in all these examples is “HOPE”. Look again at

all the above mentioned people, put yourself in their shoes and think what exactly they are trying

to hope for. There is a missing link in all their lives, reasons not known for the same and

inaccessibility of a credible source or a person to answer their question which is the sole reason

for reading the ASTRO section with curiosity.

Let me simply elaborate the word HOPE- looking for a possibility or a solution for an issue (I do

not intend to use the word problem here). The issue might relate to something very trivial at

present, something unexplainable that happened in the past or a major concern about the future.

The interesting fact here is that everyone above is trying to find one source of answer in relation

to past, present and future! The answer to this issue is Ancient Divine Science known as Vedic

Astrology or simply Astrology. In Sanskrit language it is known as Jyotish Shastra. It is

definitely a science and an art and has stood the test of Time since time immemorial. It’s a

proven science. Now take a look at the traditional definition of Astrology – The study of the

position and motion of the planets on human beings and human lives.

Science says that waxing and waning of the moon affects the water tides on our planet. The solar

energy from the Sun affects human beings and nature in varied ways. Likewise the planets too

have significant influence on our body and life events. There is one common component in

human beings and the planets. It is Energy. Apart from our physical or gross energy we have our

subtle energy or bio-etheric energy. The planets and the entire Cosmos too are made up of

Cosmic energy. According to science, Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be

transformed from one form to another. Now some of you might be actually laughing at this idea

and wondering how the planets situated so far can influence us (our body or our lives). Let me

explain. The modern gadgets and the entire advanced technological innovations are based on the

concept of energy. For e.g. when you speak on your cellphone, it converts the voice (sound

waves) into an electric signal which further gets transmitted as radio waves and is converted

back into the sound. Now, I have a question for all of you (from school going student to young

couple mentioned in the first para) – Can anyone see the sound waves, electrical signal and radio

waves with their naked eyes? No. But science has proved this by giving us the most sophisticated

gadgets and technology. Likewise the planets affect us (in good or bad way) exactly the same

way the moon energy or the Solar energy affects the planet Earth. This study of how the planets

affects human beings and human life

No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?”

“On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”

IT is the name that never was – and most would agree better for it. Natalie Massenet has revealed that she initially wanted to call Net-A-Porter “What’s New Pussycat?”

When the entrepreneur – and BFC chairman – first started out, she was riding the crest of the Pashmina trend wave, selling her friend’s imported scarves online. As the business grew and she moved towards building a more comprehensive edit of products, a name was needed and her initial idea was quickly vetoed by a steely solicitor.
